    Description:
Mountfort depicts the iconic Edmonds Factory, gardens and 'Sure to Rise' logo synonymous with the Edmond's cookery book and baking products. The felted exterior is mounted on a wooden frame and has multi-dimensional layering of the garden foreground and the building behind. In each window frame is a black and white, passport-sized photograph of women from Canterbury, New Zealand, who have had an impact on the countrys history. Mountforts Sure to Rise was made in 1993 in the year celebrating 100 years on from the year a substantial womens suffrage petition was presented to parliament, resulting in women winning the right to vote. The "Sure to Rise" image has long been an icon of female domesticity, which Mountfort felt belied the contribution women made in other walks of life. By inserting images of women representing areas of achievement in art, culture, sport, education and politics, Mountfort celebrates the substantial contribution of women in Canterbury over the last 100 years.
    Artist statement, 1993:
"This fibre work is a celebration of the contribution women have made to the community over the last 100 years in Canterbury. It seemed an appropriate choice to feature the photographs in the windows of the Edmonds "Sure to Rise" building as women have been associated with their products in their daily preparation of food. The title "Sure to Rise" also is significant in this Women's Suffrage Year. I like Jean Herbison's comment: 'I have been very grateful for the different windows, smaller or larger, Multi-faceted or even of stained glass which have encouraged me to be "Sure to Rise" to another or wider level of Education.' Each of these women hae been encouraged to rise to higher levels of achievement in their chosen careers and have distinguished themselves in some way. Although it has involved much time and work the execution of this work has given me great joy as I feel women's contribution to the community has been grossly underrated and ignored."
